Media Co-Witnesses MIA’s Advance to Ten-Million International Airport in MIA 25th Anniversary of Operation14 Jan 2020

Macau International Airport (MIA) hosted the 2020 Media Spring Dinner on 14th Jan 2020 to celebrate the approach of Chinese Lunar New Year. 2019 was a special year that has commemorated both the 70th anniversary of founding of People's Republic of China and the 20th  anniversary of Macau's returning to motherland, during which MIA not only has embraced unprecedented opportunities, but also has faced many unusual challenges arisen from. With the all-out support from the Central and SAR Government, along with the collaboration and the guidance from the corporate management as well as the close attention and the advice from media friends, team of MIA continues coping together with joint forces and composure that let no one down. Meanwhile, media has been following attentively to MIA as well as to the aviation industry, and co-witnessed MIA’s advancing direction and aim in the beginning stage of its 25th year of operation.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) Mr. Ma Iao Hang noted in his welcome speech that MIA received more than 9.6 million passengers in 2019 with a year-on-year increase of 16%, which is the highest passenger traffic MIA has accomplished which exceeds 14 times of the local population; over 77,000 aircraft movements were handled, representing an yearly increase of 18%, 7 new airlines and 13 more destinations were introduced into MIA, and there are 34 airlines at present connecting Macau to 59 destinations covering Mainland China, China Taiwan, Southeast and Northeast Asia. MIA Zhongshan and Jiangmen service centers also officially commenced operation in 2019. Despite Sino-US trade war that caused a general slip in cargo section in the neighboring cities, via the ceaseless effort to explore the market, MIA still managed to reach the cargo volume of more than 42,218 tonnes with a year-on-year increase of 1.72%, and the percentage via full cargo flights in the market has increased from 9% in 2018 to 24% last year. Once again, MIA has been awarded the 2019 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards "Best Airport - Asia" (under 1M tonnes). The operation of business jets dropped 15% with 2,768 movements recorded due to the globally steep shrink within the industry. The overall revenue of the airport is estimated to reach 6.2 billion patacas with a year-on-year increase of 12%. As of 2019, five installments of loan repayments to three shareholders (MSAR government shareholders included) amounting to total MOP545 million and five distribution of preferred dividends of MOP487 million were paid to shareholders (MSAR government shareholders included), loan repayment and dividend payment will be continued this year after settlement, and the preferred shares are scheduled to be redeemed in 2022 when the preferred capital matures.

2020 marks the 25th anniversary of MIA's safe and efficient operation, CAM will continue aiming at “Safety, Efficiency and Effectiveness”, bearing the mindset of "Base in Macau, Back on motherland and Face to world", and facilitating MIA to become the model of ten-million multi-functionally international airports. MIA is to continue proactively utilizing its advantages and giving full play in the building of the world class city and airport cluster in the Greater Bay Area. With the People & Honesty oriented principal, MIA will spare no less effort to provide our passengers with safe and comfortable surroundings as well as services. the South Extension of the Passenger Terminal Building has officially inaugurated, which by the completion will equip MIA with 3 more loading bridges and an area expansion of 17,000 m2, and a yearly capacity will be increased to 10 million passengers; in the result of which other than more gratifying travel experience, more serviceable space will be provided as well to both passengers and the airport joint inspection entities; regarding to the airport operations, A-CDM platform will be integrated in line with the construction of new AOCC & EOC so that the operation safety and efficiency will be greatly improved; at the same time, the cyber security will be further strengthened, biometric technology will be fully introduced, paperless travel will also be promoted, and “One ID” will be deployed, which not just optimizes the whole process, but also enhances the travel experience.

In the respect of aviation market, by using the fifth freedom, the development of mid-long haul service as well as the potential market will be further explored, and more diversified routes and charter services are expected to be launched. Looking into 2020, 10.35 million of passengers and 81,000 aircraft movements are expected, representing an increase of 8% and 5% respectively; while 43,500 tonnes of cargo are to be processed with an increase of 3%, and 2,823 business jet movements are to be handled with an increase of 2%.
