AACM establishes database for aviation noise monitoring11 Jul 2017

The fact that the economy of Macao has continued to grow and that the infrastructures are continuously being improved has led to the rapid development of our society. Macau International Airport is a city airport which plays a key role in the transportation network between Macao and the outside world. In view of the possible outcome that the aviation noise might bring up an important environmental issue to the society, AACM wishes to establish the aviation noise monitoring stations with the objective of collecting the said data in a systematic way. In 2013, the Authority started to plan for the project of building the stations within the range of the flight path so as to collect the noise data on the long-run, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The data obtained will be used to integrate with the flight information to run the analysis report.

The first-phased installation includes five noise monitoring stations which are situated at the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, the runway north end of Macau International Airport, the operations building of Air Macau, O Lago Building (Edifício do Lago) in Taipa and Ip Heng Building (Edifício Ip Heng) in Seac Pai Van. The installation work started last December with the last one to finish its installation yesterday on 10 July 2017. The training of personnel was just concluded in June this year. AACM will test the facilities in the coming months and expects to see the stations to officially run in the coming August or September.

Through long-term collection and monitoring, AACM will be able to analyze the changes in the aviation noise and identify any specific case and the cause of it. In this manner, AACM will then be able to devise relief measures and implement improvement actions.

The service provider, EDMS Environmental Engineering Consulting Company Limited, was hired by AACM through the open tender process to work on the study for the assessment and the monitoring of the aviation noise in Macao and the installation of the noise monitoring stations for the first phase. AACM will monitor the operations of the stations and take timely manner to plan for the implementation of the second phase.
